Emerald rings: What you need to know before you buy
About emerald rings
Emerald rings are classy and sophisticated and can be worn in the office or on a night out. Whether you believe, as some do, that wearing an emerald ring brings you closer to nature, helps you become wiser, or eases a woman's labor, it's easy to see why this rich green diamond is associated with nature and therefore fertility and how such beliefs could arise. Because of the association with nature and therefore life, emeralds are often used in religious jewelry with a resurrection theme, such as crosses.
Cuts and adjustments
Due to their natural structure, emeralds are usually cut into rectangles (Emerald cut), squares or sometimes ovals. An emerald is more damaged when cut in a round or pear cut, unless they are polished for a flaw so these cuts may cost more.
Emeralds are usually set in yellow gold because the two rich colors complement each other so well, but you can still find white gold or platinum settings. Given a brightly colored stone, it can be a very elegant and modern look, although white can make a less vibrant stone look lifeless.
Choosing a ring
The stone
The most valuable emerald color is a saturated, bright green with a hint of blue. these stones come mainly from Colombia. However, there is a wide range of other desirable colors, varying according to how light or dark they are and whether the green is pure or leans towards blue or yellow. The important thing is to find the emerald that pleases you. Except for the most expensive stones, almost all emeralds have visible flaws, including internal fractures. Even in ancient times, emeralds were treated with oil to fill these fractures and greatly enhance the color as well as the overall appearance. Sometimes the fractures are filled with another material, such as colored epoxies. These are considered standard treatments, although the jeweler should mention them.
The binding of an emerald
The ring base should highlight and protect your stone. It's also okay if the setting hides any flaws, as long as the jeweler tells you about them and doesn't sell you a flawed stone as superior to it. The right mount can protect your ring. There should be no exposed corners as this is a special and sensitive stone. Because of their internal flaws, emeralds are more vulnerable to breaking than softer but harder stones. A closed "back" foundation can make the color richer and also hide imperfections better than an open back foundation. Again, this is not a problem as long as the jeweler informs you.
Caring for your Ring
Emeralds are almost always oiled or given other treatments to fill tiny fractures in the stones, so they should not be washed with soapy water. Because of the inclusions, emeralds should never be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner. This can literally break them from the inside out. You should also never wear an emerald ring while washing dishes or any other activity where you might hit your hand on a hard surface, as this could break a stone if you hit it at the wrong angle. Cabochon stones are much less likely to be damaged by an impact, although they are just as vulnerable to ultrasonic cleaning. That said, emeralds are still harder than many other common stones, and the vast majority of owners experience no problems at all.
