Greek traditions of engagement and marriage
As you celebrate your commitment to get married, if you are Greek, you can also celebrate your heritage by following Greek engagement traditions. These customs, many of which come from the depths of the centuries, provide a special way to include your family and your social environment in your happiness.
Six Greek engagement traditions
Whether you are of Greek descent or not, you probably know that a lot has to be planned in a Greek wedding or engagement. If you have seen the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, do you have any idea about the complexity of a Greek wedding ceremony. But what about the engagement itself? Tradition is very important at this time as well.
Here are some of the most important and unforgettable Greek engagement traditions. You may want to incorporate some of these customs into your celebration.
Commitment is important
In traditional Greek society, it is very important for a couple to get engaged. This engagement period is the time when the two families can meet. These days, the duration of the engagement period may vary depending on the couple's circumstances, but the importance of the engagement has not changed over time.
Asking for her hand
Today, most American couples simply agree to get married when they feel ready. This does not happen in a traditional Greek engagement. The man must ask the woman's father for her hand. This often means that the man has to establish a relationship with the woman's family before he thinks of talking to her father to get married.
Bride dowry
In traditional Greek culture, the bride often has a dowry. This dowry consists mainly of bed linen made by the bride and the women of her family. Typical items include towels, sheets, tablecloths and other essentials. Often, the bride's father includes a furnished home for the couple. This custom has largely fallen into disrepair in recent years, but is still practiced by some very traditional families.
Blessing of a Priest
Religion plays an important role in Greek culture. Before getting married, a Greek couple must make three visits to the priest. At each visit, they will receive advice on the upcoming wedding. While the couple is usually planning a wedding right now, they are not considered fully engaged until the priest agrees to the union.
Gathering engagements
After a couple has received the priest's blessing, families often organize a large engagement party. The priest will attend this event a few times and will publicly bless the engagement rings. After the couple receives this public blessing, friends and family gather around, shouting wishes for the couple.
Hidden Bride
In most cultures, there is a custom of keeping the bride hidden on the wedding day. In the Greek tradition this is very important. It is considered bad luck for the wedding if the groom sees the bride before the wedding ceremony. This custom may have originated in ancient Greece where the weddings of kings were usually arranged by the parents without the direct interested parties having seen each other and especially in the royal families they were weddings of interest.
Final Words
Incorporating Greek engagement traditions into your pre-wedding celebrations is a great way to honor your family and your heritage. Have fun designing your wedding!
