Platinum is a fairly new metal in the world of jewelry design. The metal began to gain popularity in the 19th century and was only recently used to make diamond engagement or wedding rings. Although platinum is considered a "new" metal, its history dates back to the ancient Egyptians and pre-Columbian Indian culture. During this period, platinum was considered an extremely important metal.

In recent history, the fascinating metal was discovered in 1557 by the French-Italian physician Julius Caeser Scaliger while visiting Central America. In 1590 the Spanish Conquistadors found platinum in the Ecuadorian rivers in search of gold. At the time, they did not know that white metal was actually platinum and called it platinum, which means "little silver". The metal was then thrown back into the river to turn it into silver.

In the 18th century, platinum began its journey through Europe and soon aroused the interest of scientists, who found the properties of the metal extremely fascinating. For example, its properties piqued the interest of the Swedish scientist Scheffer in 1751, who proclaimed the precious metal as the seventh element at the time. Scheffer became fascinated with platinum and led him to become the first scientist to successfully melt platinum.

In the late 1700s, the first to have pure platinum was the French physicist P.F. Chababeau, who made a glass presented to Pope Pius VI. The King of France, Louis XVI, was so convinced of the properties of platinum that he declared that platinum was the only metal suitable for kings. In the early 1800s, the British chemist WHWollaston obtained a pure sample of platinum. the separation of PGMs (the six metals of the platinum group, platinum, palladium, rhodium, osmium, ruthenium and iridium) are still used to this day. Other techniques for producing metal, however, were only introduced in the 19th century.

During World War II, platinum was banned because metal was a strategic material. During this period, platinum demand was suspended for decades. Only until very recently where platinum made a strong resurgence as a popular metal for jewelry and especially for single stone rings or in general for jewelry intended for brides.

Today, the production of platinum jewelry remains a difficult process. The reason? Platinum melts only at an extreme melting point of 3190 degrees Fahrenheit or 1755 degrees Celsius, making the metal extremely difficult to work with. Requires the expertise of craftsmen and rich experience in making platinum jewelry.
